This work is set in Hokkaido, Japan in the late Meiji Era. The protagonist is Saichi Sugimoto, a soldier who participated in the Russo-Japanese War and was known as “the immortal Sugimoto”. In order to save his comrade-in-arms, Toraji’s wife, Umeko, he sets out on an adventure in the wilds of Hokkaido to acquire a vast treasure trove of gold, which is said to have been hidden by the executed prisoners. Sugimoto, in cooperation with Asirpa of the Ainu tribe, searches for clues to the buried treasure.
